We are what we eat yes?! And how important is it to know ourselves, and check ourselves before we wreck ourselves?! VERY! Well, I believe our eats is the same way. If we are what we eat, which I firmly believe we are, we gotta know all their is to know about our food.

Especially when it comes to purchasing, preparation and my favourite, promoting to our friends.  I did not include fruit, gluten, nut milks, or sweeteners in this particular blog cause we just don't have all day, ya know?! But at least I feel a smooch better about you knowing a smooch more about these amazing plant-based eats!

ALSO, if you subscribe at "FREE MEMBERSHIP" you will receive a plant-based grocery list this month during #meatlessmarch. So since these eats are on it, I feel better about you being even more educated on your food than before!
Enjoy and chew well, food lovers!

These grains are actually seeds! Pseudograins are commonly referred to as “grains”, but when we get down and dirty with the science of food, they are actually seeds! **Nerd alert!** Another cool reason why we separate these seed-to-grain into their own unpronounceable category is because they are GLUTEN-FREE, flyin' high in protein and loaded with fiber VERSUS other grains.

ALWAYS buy organic!!
Why? Non-organic canned beans contain bisphenol [BPA], low quality eats, and preservatives [which is stored in canned goods as “salt”].

BPA = Plastic contaminants in our canned goods. The inside of canned foods are lined with BPA to keep them, well … “fresh”. Now, I know you would never eat a balloon or syran wrap cause that would be disgusting.
But every single canned good we pry open = plastic. That just stresses me out.
Kinda like margarine = plastic. If you only change one thing and one thing only about your diet, get rid of margarine! Don't even finish the container. Throw it out!

LOVE NOTE: This is NOT to scare you! Well the margarin thing is to scare you, yes. But re-canned beans: I just wanna educate you on laying low on the Non-Organic canned foods and if you are in need of some food in a jiffy, go for the Organic canned eats!

I am sure you know tons and tons there is to know about this gluten-free, protein-packed, fiber-full, vitamin B-baller, mineral-rich pseudograin. But did you know quinoa is covered with a natural coating called saponi. This coating is the powder residue covering the nutrient-rich seed. We must rinse our quinoa super well prior to cooking. Even better, soak your quinoa in water over night, rinse well, then cook the sexy seeds for maximum ease-in-digestion.

4. Legumes, Lentils and Beans, OH MY!

Legumes = Lentils, split peas, and beans.

Lentils = Wikipedia says it best: “The lentil is an edible pulse”. These seeds come in yellow, orange, red, green, brown and black colours. Their nutritional protein per calorie count is one of the highest of all legumes, losing to soybeans - which I personally do not have a love affair with, so firsts-the-worst, seconds-the-best in my books!

Beans = Kidney, adzuki, garbanzo [chickpea], pinto, black, black-eyed, and navy beans are all scrumptious, nutritious and all a huge part of our plant-based lifestyle.

LOVE NOTE: Split peas are exactly that! A yellow or green pea, literally, split in half. They are VERY often confused or mistaken with lentils. So, if you don’t know, now you know. [Yep, Notorious B-I-G just came out].

The permission is an orangey coloured berry that is unfairly unpopular [but saves more for me]! This seriously delicious tomato-like fruit can be eaten fresh, dried or cooked. Persimmons have gorgeous amounts of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, vitamin C, iron and potassium. All of these gorgeous qualities produce a sparkling glow, ageless skin, and ease-in-being. I invite you to fall in love with another one of natures sweeteners.

This anti-inflammatory, buttery tasting, powerfood is all that, and dairy-free! Ghee is super high in vitamin A and E, each of them providing us with a stronger immune system, high cell vibes, cell growth, and a wicked immune system. You can make your own ghee at home or purchase at a farmers market.

LOVE NOTE: Always be-friend your local market farmers. They’ve got the goods and they are happy to teach you all about their product. If you find a bit of a grump in the bunch, you most likely won’t like their process or product anyways! So just smile and move on ;)))

Inflammation: 7 Things You Need To Know About It and 7 Foods That Cause It

Time Magazine once titled inflammation as “The Silent Killer”. Amen and applause TIME!  They linked inflammation to heart attacks, cancer, alzheimers, and other diseases.  This amazing and educating article happened way back in 2004.  It jammed about the world-wide role that inflammation plays on pretty much every disease’s process contributing to major illness or death.

In my health coaching, without the client knowing it or not, I [and I know all my other fellow amazing Holistic Honeys] are constantly working on ingesting anti-inflammatory foods, and keeping inflammation away from our precious innards.

1. Inflammation is our immune systems natural response to dis-ease, irritation, infection, or injury. Disease or dis-ease in our body is a simple interruption in the natural healthy flow of our being.

2. Our organs and internal pieces are directly hurt and injured with inflammation. Just like a sprained ankle or an open-wound on our glowing skin, our inside systems become red, infected, painful, swollen, and lose their ability to perform perfectly and fully.

3. So many factors effect inflammation in our bods:

  • Stress
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Sleep habits
  • Smoking
  • Mother Earth pollution
  • Lack of exercise
  • MOST OF ALL Eats

4. Every body is unique.  That includes every body’s response to these lifestyle choices.  Some 100 year young humans can smoke every day of their life and not pass onto heaven with lung disease.  Some humans can eat 1000 calories worth of white sugar per day and have a 25 inch waist.  Some humans can get 4 hours of sleep and glow all day long without coffee or complaining.

We are all so pleasantly individual, and we all have different inflammatory levels and limits.  But eventually something will find a way to interrupt your ease-in-being, and you’ll have 99 problems with THAT bitch being one!

5. The Glycemic Index plays a huge roll when talking inflammation.   Eating low glycemic styles, DECREASES inflammation.

6. Any aches and pains in our body’s can for sure thank chronic inflammation.  Constant stress, eating these terrible inflammatory foods, or lack of exercise will lead to chronic inflammation, which will guarantee you sore joints, a pain in your neck [literally] or a stiff body upon waking in the glorious morning.

7.  In addition to your insides, inflammation is the silent killer to your youth! The causes for the immune system to inflame also become the causes for premature aging. Saggy skin, bags under the eyes, lack of glow, brittle hair, weak nails, and lack of energy are all brilliant reasons to avoid the seven food mentioned below, and great reason to educate yourself further on the serious results of inflammation.

Every time one of these foods are eaten our immune system [aka Our entire insides starting with our mouths ending with the tips of our toes] is attacked and begins to fight its way back to solid health.

Imagine this cycle happening in your body at least 70 times per minute over a 20 minute summer BBQ meal.

  1. White sugar and refined starch
Your body will thank you in more than one sexy way if you eliminate this food from your life all together!
  2. Vegetable Oil
So many vegetable oils are high in omega-6 fats.  While these fatty acids are super healthy fats to a balanced body, too much of them result in way too much omega-6 fatty acids which leads to an imbalance in omega-3 to omega-6 fats, which leads to imbalance in blood sugar … enter inflammatory chart here … Cooking with small amounts of coconut oil is perfection and using small amounts of Olive oil for salads or dressings will a
  3. Dairy products
Due to the insane amounts of production dairy products have to go through to be approved to sell and purchase, our bodies cannot recognized its nutrients and ingest it as a toxin.  Our insides fight to get rid of the foreign product leaving our guts and our precious insides attacked, exhausted, and inflamed.
  4. Red meat
Most of this red meat explanation is super cool learnings for a more intense blog post for another day but for now:
Red meat contains an acid called Neu5Gc [N-glycolylneuraminic acid].  This acid is found quite abundantly in read meat and when ingested causes immediate inflammation.  ‘Cause there is so much acidity in red meat, it can lead to insane inflammatory immune response, which can lead to some serious disease within out awesome body’s.
  5. Gluten
Wheat, rye and barley all contain this common allergen.  Just like a pollen allergy, when you ingest food your body is allergic too your insides begin to sneeze, develop a runny nose, and just as if you had watery eyes, your body immediately becomes inflamed to fight the allergy against the over-used grain ingredient, gluten.
  6. Processed foods
CORN is found in tons and tons and tons of processed foods.  Corn derivatives such as high-fructose corn syrup, or corn starch is crazy cheap so the food industry uses it to fill their food boxes with more stuff to trick you with more nutrients. Seriously so sad that we are tricked like that.  But anyways, this refined corn starts at the beginning of our inflammation flow chart, and swells up our insides like a birthday balloon, creating huge pathways for riskier, worse disease.
Also, packaged foods contain trans fats, which are LDL [low density lipoprotein] which attack the walls of your blood vessels causing inflammatory response to occur to fight against this dis-ease in being.

Understanding Cholesterol in a Nut Shell

Cholesterol is carried in the blood atteache to proeitns called lipoprtoeins.

There are two main forms of lipoproteins:

Low Density Lipoprotein = Bad Cholesterol
High Density Lipoprotein = Good Cholesterol

LDL carries cholesterol through your body, delivering it to our organs and tissue.  But when in excess it continues to be delivered and dropped off and ends up sticking to the blood vessel walls and build up plaque, narrowing our blood vessels interrupting the natural blood flow, sometimes completely.

HDL sees the excess cholesterol as a hot date.  HDL picks up the excess cholesterol and takes it back to our trusty liver where it is broken down and reduces our risk of dis-ease of the heart.

7. Food Chemicals
Regardless of how much we eat processed foods, our bodies will not become savvy in breaking down chemicals like food colouring, additives, articificcial sweeteners, and preservatives.  All of these constant chemicals we eat as if they are a food group will never be nourishing to our insides and therefore always ignite our immune system to respond against it, and end each bite inflamed and pissed off.

So kinda like Brad Paisley said, “you’re not supposed to say the word “cancer” in a song.”  I don’t like to put that kinda of juju out there, but thank you for learning a smidge more about inflammation.  And thank you for taking this topic super serious, cause seriously, its serious.  I love your life.  Thank you for letting me be a part of it, today!

Big Love,

Sugar Is Seriously So Shitty

I used to make sweet sweet love to $10.00 sacks of .05 cent candy from Bulk Barn.

My girlfriend and I, in university, convinced ourselves that the “Candy Diet” was a brilliant idea and that this no-fat-diet was the secret to a wicked body, without sacrificing delicious food!  Yep AND we were Kin and Health Science majors. Brilliant.

Our poor little sugar-addicted brains didn’t know just how brutal that solution to a careless diet with a killer body really was. And as a life health coach I would love to say that that is disgusting, so unhealthy, so unwholly, and so stupid - but really, on a weak day, I still find myself plotting how one can survive and still maintain a banging body on such junk. Ya know those dumb days when you meet the bombshell girlfriend of your buddy, and she does nothing but drink copious amounts of alcohol and eats shitty food all while maintaining her TEN of a body strung in an itty-bitty bikini. Some moments on those days welcome back my ill-ego mind.  That silly mind filled with the thought that image is everything.  That mind that could give two shits about what our digestive system functions like if my body is bangin in a strappy sexy bikini. Yes, that unwholly thought process still happens to me once in a while. But once I think about the positive juju I want to genuinely give and get out of life, those dumbo, sugarland, hot-body-on-the-outside-rotting-on-the-inside daydreams, DO go away.  And thankfully I have taken the time to coach myself to that wicked juju place and kick that vain-filled health-smealth lifestyle to the trash.

It is 100% a struggle to say no to a sweet treat made with this white cancerous confetti. I totally get that. And yes, once in a while, when one of our kiddos bake a treat, sans our help, this kind of sugary gift requires a bite or a shared portion. But now I know how crazy important it is to feed our bodies with strong, nutrient rich foods, ESPECIALLY when we have ingested some less than valuable junk.  Sometimes those sugary treats are a part of living a life of love.  When a treat is presented by our kiddos served with an ear to ear smile, we now just ensure it is always followed up with a GreenBelly, 10 bathroom visits worth of water, and squeezes of lemon to help aid our digestive systems in the detoxing process.

All vanity aside, with a fat stomach being the least of our worries, this white cancerous confetti is a tough tough tough daily craving to fight, and none of us are alone! All of those famous Instagram fitness idols fight it.  The celebrities, the models, your personal trainer, your yogi … ALL have a vice that involves this great white killer. We all are drawn into the sugar spell within two bites.  I just now have made it my job, literally 80% of my career is now made up of coaching amazing, worthwhile humans to drop the binging and crush the shitty sugar addiction.

Fruit does not make us fat. The cupcake from the person who told you not to eat fruit, makes you fat!

There are more than 200 kinds of added sugars in our eats. Some are totally awesome sweeteners that I use on a daily bases:

  • Maple Syrup
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Sucanant
  • Dates
  • Honey
  • Fruit

Some of these other sweeteners, listed below, are friggin terrorists to your health, and ultimately killers to a life you dream of. You may think that sounds a smidge dramatic, but white sugar in leads to wicked mood murder, flabby skin, damaged hearts, inflammation, poor food choices, and proven over and over and over again via our negative self-talk-post-sugar-intake, a glow-less life.

So all this white sugar shit, causes inflammation.
Inflammation causes disease.
Disease kills our glow.
Our glow is our vibe on life.
Life is ours to make love to.
Make love to your life, sans the white sugary shit.

P.S. Cinnamon is a wicked anti-inflammatory wholly sprinkling sweetener that promote ease in being and is our blood sugars [aka Craving-Makers] best friend.

I love your life, my sweet friend.  Your organs thank you for learning more about what kills their home and your gorgeous soul.

Love Jillian

Restaurant Resolutions

Avoid adding ice to your water at the table. Contrary to the "weightloss tip" that your body burns more calories trying to cool down the ice cold water, room temperature digests gorgeously in your body and aids stressless digestive love.

If the breadbasket is on the table, you're going to mow down that warm, cushy, white tummy ache. Ask the smiling waiter to take it away after you take one piece or ask them to not deliver the basket at all.

First joyous happening of this resolution is that you are not ordering unwholly foods "just because you are out for dinner". You are ordering off the menu to fuel your body with delicious nutrients that you are treating yourself to by someone else cooking.
Secondly, portion sizes at the restaurant make it super simple to ask for a takeout box WITH your meal and make the next day's lunch or dinner easy! You double your money and it gives you a break from one meal prep for a day.

If you would like an appetizer you will not be needing the dessert menu.  If you have more than one glass of wine, you are having a nutritiously rich entrée and zero appetizer & zero dessert.  If you choose zero appetizer and were dying to have dessert, ask that everyone receives a utensil ... The best part of dessert is the first bite, really.

The more relaxed you are, the longer you will take to eat your delicious meal. The longer it takes for you to eat your meal, the better you digest your eats and absorb the nutrients. The more nutrients your smart, efficient body absorbs, the more full and satisfied your cells are; therefore, the less you will over-eat.

Enjoy someone else cutting up the vegetables! Keeping a simple resolution of "Every time I go out to eat I will always order a salad" is a wholly habit you are welcome to blame me for ☺ It is a great treat to try different salad dressings, and the most perf way to avoid poor "oh we are out to eat; let's be gluttonous". Every restaurant has salad options, and gratefully, at least 5 salads to choose from. Then you can top that salad with grilled animal protein, fish or MAYBE just MAAAAYBE depending on the restaurant, they may have beans or legumes in their sumptuous salads.

Spontaneity = passion. Save it for your lover!!!
If you don't have a gourmet meal prepared at home, omelet for dinner it is! It is less expensive, time saving and nutritiously brilliant to crush eggs and goat's cheese on a bed of greens than it is to choose a random restaurant, order in a rush, eat mindlessly, and spend unplanned cash-money on an unwholly dish.
